Smaller geometric motifs or rosettes fill in the surrounding space. The colors of the medallions - soft apricot, gold and ivory with red accents – are especially beautiful against the variegated blue ground. Vinescroll main and minor borders repeat the colors of the field medallions, nicely unifying the entire effect of the rug. The drawing is crisp and precise, but also spontaneous, the hallmark of the best Karabagh village rugs.

This extraordinary Karabagh runner features a pendulous medallion with a richly-colored background and all-over rose pattern. A multitude of auspicious bird symbols decorate the geometric grid of branching Karabagh roses that are woven with a great amount of detail in exceptional shades of green and rose-red that contrast against the dark ground. Pyramidal inner borders with a bi-color zigzagging pattern and traditional guardbands woven with a pattern repeating floral motifs complete this Karabagh runner.

43827 Antique Karabagh, Caucasus, late nineteenth century - A highly abstract composite medallion with finials sits within a warm ivory field on this virtually one-of-a kind antique Karabagh. Similar medallions hover above and below the central one with a array of stylized vines and tiny animals filling the areas in between. Multiple narrow borders combine to frame the field. The range and depth of the color is outstanding, but perhaps the most unusual feature of this extraordinary piece is way that the borders indent slightly to make space for the central medallion, imparting a dynamic elasticity to the overall design.

The palette of the carpet is vibrant, with medallions rendered largely in black and yellow boldly set against the brilliant red field. A cooler grayish tan border frames the field, although it vinescroll design maintains the strident geometric drawing of the field. The openness of the design balances the use of rich color, and indeed, it allows the color to take pride of place in the overall composition.
